A useful lawn plan separates three things: an instruction that applies to the seed and site, arithmetic based on that instruction, and conditions that still need checking. Lawn Seed Planner connects those steps without pretending to inspect a property remotely.

What this site covers
The quantity tools perform label-based arithmetic. They can use your area and supported inputs without knowing a city. The timing and site-preparation guides focus on Minnesota residential cool-season lawns. Iowa material is explicitly identified where used for establishment care or regional comparison. These are different scopes; a usable calculator does not make a Minnesota calendar appropriate for another climate.
The site does not provide pesticide schedules, diagnose disease or compaction from a photograph, certify an equipment route, choose a universal grass mixture, supply live soil temperatures, or predict germination. It does not rank seed brands. No field tests, professional credentials, customer results or university endorsement are claimed.
How an instruction becomes a result
First identify the task and exact label. Then choose product coverage, product-weight rate or an explicitly stated PLS rate. Keep the chosen basis attached to the result. Only the last path uses a supported PLS fraction. Conditions such as retained grass, wet ground and the establishment method are still separate decisions.
The tools have no database of brand rates. This is deliberate: a manufacturer webpage and a retailer-hosted package artifact can disagree, and a name alone does not establish the version in a reader's hands. The label guide documents one observed version conflict without claiming either artifact describes every current bag.
Source register
Sources were checked during preparation on November 7, 2026. A source's review year is not the date of a field inspection. Primary guidance supports factual statements; search terms and community questions helped identify tasks but do not establish growing rules.
| Source | Date shown / scope | What it supports here |
|---|---|---|
| Minnesota Extension: Renovating a lawn | Reviewed 2024; Minnesota | Whether renovation is needed, ordinary timing, seed contact and retained-canopy management |
| Minnesota Extension: Dormant seeding | Reviewed 2025; Minnesota | Cold-soil method, usual regional period, minimal preparation and spring care |
| Minnesota Extension: Seeding and sodding | Reviewed 2024; seed sections used | Rain adjustment, moisture and transition after germination; sod care is not transplanted |
| Minnesota Extension: Mowing practices | Reviewed 2024; established Midwest lawns | Maintenance-height context and one-third practice, not a universal first-mow rule |
| Iowa State: Watering newly seeded lawns | Updated June 9, 2026 | Moisture target and gradual transition toward deeper, less frequent water |
| Iowa State: Seeding a new lawn | Reviewed September 2026; Iowa | Establishment explanation; Iowa dates are not presented as Minnesota dates |
| Iowa State: First mowing | Updated October 14, 2026; Iowa new lawns | Explicitly labeled comparison, not a Minnesota-wide height rule |
| LSU AgCenter: Pure Live Seed Calculation | No review date displayed | Pure-seed × germination; sum mixture components; convert an explicit PLS target once. Its species-rate table is not used here |
| USDA Seed Testing Program | No review date displayed | Distinguish purity, germination and other laboratory tests from a yard outcome |
| USDA seed-analysis explanation | 2021, printed pp. 12–13 | Separate hard and dormant seed categories; our simplified tool does not support them |
| NIST conversion factors | SI conversion reference | International foot/metre and pound/kilogram definitions; footnote 22 supplies the exact pound factor |
Page-level source lists retain narrower claims and limits. Linked institutions do not sponsor this site. If an instruction conflicts with your current package, local conditions or a supplier's clarification, resolve that conflict before acting.
Diagrams and examples
Explanatory diagrams are original code-drawn schematics. The homepage botanical illustration is generated artwork and labeled as such; it is not a botanical specimen or evidence. They explain contact, stages, method branches, area and arithmetic. None is a surveyed lawn, laboratory analysis, real plant measurement, guaranteed growth timeline or before-and-after result. Figures include captions and text equivalents. The teaching tag, prices, dimensions and input examples are invented and explicitly labeled; they are not recommended mixtures or current offers.
Visual concepts were used to develop the interface. Generated concept details were not accepted as factual sources. Website numeric labels and prose were checked separately against the source register and the stated formulas.
Tool behavior and data
The calculators run in your browser without sending calculation inputs to a server. A supported tag result can move to the amount tool in the same tab through session storage; Reset clears the handoff. Closing the tab ends that session under normal browser behavior. Exports remain on your device unless you share them. Print includes the source URL.
The site has no advertising, affiliate placements, tracking scripts, accounts, uploads or newsletter form in this first version. Cloudflare hosts static files and processes normal website requests; this does not mean hosting has no operational logs. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. Fonts are self-hosted, so viewing a page does not contact a font CDN. Hanken Grotesk is distributed under its SIL Open Font License.
Corrections and the next check
When a result looks wrong, first preserve the input basis, units, exact label and exported sheet. Recalculate the formula manually, then resolve any label ambiguity with the supplier or local Extension. This site cannot settle an unseen package conflict.
Guidance will be reviewed when reliable new evidence or a material source change is identified. The date above records this content review, not a promise of continuous monitoring. A working website, a search-engine crawl and a successful lawn are separate outcomes.
